Save $$ on Good Food, Part 1

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

Whether it’s the pandemic that’s affected your budget, the extra spending around the holidays or a new goal of eating more whole foods, these tips will help you save at the grocery store. Read on for my top cost shaving tips on a nutritious, whole foods based way of eating. Part 2 will cover what you can do in your kitchen and home to save more.

Four ways to save at the grocery store:

  • Incorporate more meatless meals. This is my #1 suggestion because it serves two purposes. It cuts back a bit on your saturated fat intake and saves you money. Meat’s expensive!

~Tofu is a great source of protein and has all 9 essential amino acids.

~Rice & beans together make a complete protein, as do many combinations of grains and legumes.

~Plus, a variety of whole foods means a variety of nutrients - so switch it up!

  • Build your meals around affordable, highly nutritious foods like onions, potatoes, carrots, legumes and rice. Add in some greens, fruit and protein.

  • Know the dirty dozen. If you’re planning to buy organic foods, know which fruits and vegetables contain higher amounts of pesticides and focus your dollars on buying those organic. You can buy certain foods non organic with little risk, saving money there. You can find information on the dirty dozen on the Environmental Working Group’s page here.

  • Shop sales and seasonal produce. Look for what’s on sale and what's in season. Avoid high priced, out of season options. This is also a great chance to try new foods and get a good variety throughout the year.

Happy shopping!
