Changing the Course for Our Girls

If I had an opportunity to speak to my younger self… there are many, many things I would say. Some of those kind, reassuring words would be about body image. I was confused as a teen. I wasn’t sure about my body and I wasn’t sure who I was. These days, it’s even harder to cope with the constant misinformation from the media, diet culture and even labels on food. Teaching this class is an opportunity for me to help younger girls avoid much of the pain so many of us have gone through.
How big of a problem is this?
A study done in 2009 revealed that 74.5% of women say their concerns about weight and health interfere with their happiness.(1) Just as many women struggle with disordered eating. That’s most of us and it’s affecting every aspect of our lives. How can we love others well when we don’t love ourselves?
What’s more, millions, around 20 million women will develop an actual diagnosed eating disorder at some point in their lives. My goal is to help spread truth and change the course of her relationship with food before it gets obvious. I say obvious because just because it’s not a full blown eating disorder, doesn’t mean it isn’t serious yet. The way so many of us think about our bodies and how we choose our foods affects us in such negative and consuming ways.
So, I’m teaching a class just for teen girls. This class is about a lot more than telling girls that they are amazing and should love themselves just the way they are.
This is about empowering them with knowledge, with truth.
This is about learning basic nutrition, strong eating skills and getting in tune with their bodies.
This is about working through barriers and breaking down misconceptions.
This is about the why but also the what and how.
This is a stressful time in a girl’s life. She feels pressure from many angles. This is a formative time. It’s a precious and pivotal time. This can be the time your girl learns confidence in herself and her body - not a fix, but a process that she can grow and trust to carry her through her life.
